Summertime has finally arrived and with it comes our Nation’s pastime. Baseball. Come out and join us under the sun for baseball, beer, and bettering our community.

For $15 you get a ticket to the game, the honor of sitting near me, and a voucher for a hot dog, chips, and non-alcoholic beverage. Yes you can still buy beer. Hooray beer. All in all a $21 value plus the BEST PART is that $5 will be going back to the United Way’s Community Solution Fund to provide support to over 100 nonprofit programs through 60 charitable organizations.

HOW TO ORDER: Either reach out and contact a Project:U member OR email Kirsten Willis at info@project-u.org
We will be getting a block of tickets to sit together. So come alone or with your peeps.

DIRECTIONS:
Cheney Stadium is near the intersection of Tyler and 19th street in Tacoma just off of Highway 16. From Interstate 5, take exit 132 (Highway 16) west. Take the 19th Street exit going east.

It’s officially Summertime. Don’t look out your window – just believe me. So we are headed out to L’Arche Farms to help build a chicken coop and helping with general upkeep of their farm.

For those who do not know – Patrick Toohey and his great staff at L’Arche operate a farm at 11716 Vickery Avenue East, Tacoma, where the residents are adults who are developmentally disabled. They find the unique gift in all those around them and help it grow. And with any luck their crops do likewise.

We will get a tour and help out that morning for a few hours from 9am-12:30ish. Then join us back near downtown for lunch/drinks.

Curious? Want a precursor — check out L’Arche’s vendor canopy at the various Tacoma Farmer’s Markets.

Space is limited (about 20 folks) so RSVP to info@project-u.org but if the demand is great we will see what we can do.

I live in an apartment so I don’t get the joy of having my own garden to grow delicious veggies and beautiful flowers. That is why each year I love volunteering at L’Arche Farm and Gardens. Aside from the fun of planting and picking flowers and veggies, you also have the opportunity to work with some of their core members. The purpose of L’Arche’s program is to provide meaningful work for people with disabilities – a dignified and respectable work experience that really enhances the gifts of each core member. So the next time you are out at a local farmers market look for the L’Arche booth and check out their beautiful flowers and perennials!

By now, everyone has seen the ruin and devastation in the wake of the 7.0 earthquake that hit Port AU Prince in Haiti. The devastation has even hit home in Tacoma, as the news has just reported how a 22 year old Tacoma girl (working as a volunteer for a nonprofit -Friends of the Orphans). The port is devastated as are the runways making disaster relief very difficult. There is an estimated 50,000 dead with projections that it could top 100,000.

Additionally, the ramifications of this disaster is likely to last years. So how can you help? What can you do? One option (although unicef, American red cross and many other ways to help exist) is show that you LIVE UNITED and donate

Donate Money:

Easy: Text HAITI to 864833 (UNITED). And you can give $5 to the relief efforts via the United Way Worldwide Disaster Fund.

Want to give more… donations can also be given online to the fund vial www.liveunited.org or by calling 1-866-404-5826. This also a great way to ask any questions you may have about the fund.

Donate products (goods/services):

AidMatrix Network: www.aidmatrix.org ; or
Gifts in Kind international (go to www.liveunited.org) — this is primarily for corporate donors who wish to give in large donations

United Way (via United Way Worldwide) has a team of volunteers in the Caribbean region that have mobilized and our in an advisory capacity as they are determining how ot best support the long-term recovery needs. This would include access to health care, rebuilding schools, housing, as well as basic needs such as food, water, and clothing.
