7/17 – Get the Dirt on Tacoma – Volunteer at L’Arche Farms

It’s officially Summertime. Don’t look out your window – just believe me. So we are headed out to L’Arche Farms to help build a chicken coop and helping with general upkeep of their farm.

For those who do not know – Patrick Toohey and his great staff at L’Arche operate a farm at 11716 Vickery Avenue East, Tacoma, where the residents are adults who are developmentally disabled. They find the unique gift in all those around them and help it grow. And with any luck their crops do likewise.

We will get a tour and help out that morning for a few hours from 9am-12:30ish. Then join us back near downtown for lunch/drinks.

Curious? Want a precursor — check out L’Arche’s vendor canopy at the various Tacoma Farmer’s Markets.

Space is limited (about 20 folks) so RSVP to info@project-u.org  but if the demand is great we will see what we can do.

5/8 – Letter Carrier Food Drive

Letter Carrier Food Drive
First Christian Church | 602 North Orchard Street, Tacoma
1:00 – 5:00pm | Saturday, May 8

Come and help process food donations collected by our mail men/ladies. Food will help supply the food banks and hot meal services that Emergency Food Network supports in Pierce County. This event consistently collects hundreds of thousands of pounds of food – obviously we need your help and your muscle!

We’ll be volunteering at the First Christian Church drop-off location. Project:U will help process food donations and get it ready for shipment.

And it won’t be all heavy lifting. We’ll fire up the grill and hang out between donation deliveries. Join us! It’s a great way support your community and have some fun.

Don’t worry if you can’t come for the whole time. Drop in and lend a hand for as long as you can spare. Look for us near the giant trailers in the parking lot.

RSVP to info@project-u.org

Summer Volunteer Opportunities

Here are some upcoming local volunteer opportunities that Project:U wants you to know about!

Metro Parks always have some really cool events throughout the spring and summer and this year is no exception. On May 15th volunteers are needed for the new Outdoor Challenge event at Point Defiance Park from about 9:00am-3:00pm.  And save the dates for Ethnic Fest on July 23-24th!

Another new event to hit the streets of T-Town is the Tacoma Twilight Criterium. Taking place on June 12th from 3-11pm this will be another great event to come and lend a hand with a variety of tasks. Want more info or to sign up to volunteer? Contact Alan Igawa at allenigawa@gmail.com.

And don’t forget about the kids!  The Children’s Museum of Tacoma is looking for volunteers to help with their annual Playing Under the Stars fundraising event. Volunteers are needed throughout the day and during the event – contact Jen McDonald at jmcdonald@childrensmuseumoftacoma.org for more information or to sign up!

12/19 – Santa Runs Tacoma Volunteer Event

Dock St. Garage| 535 Dock Street, Tacoma
8:30am | Saturday, December 19

Come join us for a fun volunteer event on Saturday morning! Our official ‘volunteer meet up TIME’ will be at 8:30am.  Look for Kirsten to check-in and get your assignment! When you arrive look for the area that has been set up for Lindquist Dental Clinic for Children.  This area (probably a table, and inside the Dock St Pub Garage) will be the official ‘volunteer meet up point’.  You’ll need to allow time to park, as with running events the roads are often blocked and the nearby parking lots are packed.  Carpooling, walking, biking, are all encouraged.  Also, do not park somewhere that you might get stuck in…
We, most likely, will be taking chips off of runners as they cross the finish line, helping people get where they need to be, working the gear check-in/check-out station, as well as advocating for Lindquist Dental Clinic for Children and trying to get donations for the “All I Want For Christmas is my Two Front Teeth” campaign.  We will have a brief 3×5 card with what a donation of a certain amount will fund for your reference on the day of the race.

If you’re interested in volunteering with Project:U email us at info@project:u.org
